Can you try to elaborate a bit? Your statement contradicts itself.

I don't know
I think they had major super drive problems in the imac line. I just had to have mine replaced. Luckily it was still under warranty by 12 days and they replaced it for free. Now it reads discs.

Your OS disc is a DVD, not a CD.

If you have tried multiple commercial CDs, they're clean, and none of them are seen, it's time to take it in to Apple and let them replace it.

(It is also possible that the lens is merely dirty. I would personally try a disc cleaner before taking it in.)

Different laser? Don't know enough about the technical side to answer that. Only know that players quite often will quit working with one media and work just fine with the other.

(Most technicians would not recommend this, but if I have no cleaning disc around, I'll remove the battery, unplug from power, take a can of compressed air and give it a quick burst in 2 or three directions through the slot. Wait for a couple of minutes before you apply power again. Seen this work too many times to count on my own drives.)

You said that that it would read OS disks (DVD's)...what sort of "other disks" is it not reading? And don't say "CD's"...what sort of CD's?

- application install CD's
- music CD's
- "homemade" CD's
- etc.

Reads DVD's fine but when it comes to CD's its very VERY hit or miss whether it reads them or not.
