noob needs help

hi all,
the system does not boot-up.
i have a PowerPC 333Mhz that i want to get accustomed to using.
on initial power-up (1st time) it seems that the hard drive is defective.
it makes this clinking noise about 5-6 clicks then nothing.
there is nothing on the monitor except an image of a floppy with a question mark in the center of the image.
i have no operating system software floppys or CD's or manuals.
what OS should i use?

Sounds like the Hard Drive is gone. The flashing ? mark means no system can be found. What kind of Power Mac is it? What OS was on it? If the HD is bad youll need a new one before you can install the OS.

The hard drive may be OK, but there is no working system on there.

The Floppy disk icon indicates that the OS was the old classic OS9 rather than OSX on there.

Is that a beige box PowerPC or an original CRT iMac?

The most you could easily run on that is OSX 10.3 Panther

You could re-install OS9, but I would give panther a try - try ebay but make sure they are black disks

i have a spare hard disk to replace this one if it is defective.
this is a beige box PowerPC G3.
i have no idea what OS was on this system.
the OSX 10.3 Panther should do the trick?
i will take a look on ebay.
does this OS allow one to reformat and configure the hard drive?

You have to run X PostFacto to run OSX on that machine. You would be better off to run a PPC version of Linux.
