Im using OS X 10.5.8

I recently purchased a WD Elements 500gb HD and realized that I needed to reformat it for Mac, to use it. I tried to open disk utility, but every time I open it, it crashes instantly...

I even tried to open it from my Install disc, but experienced the same problem.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Is there a way for me to format the HD using a third party application, or is there a download link where I can download a fresh version of Disk Utility?

Thanks

How did you try opening Disk Utility from your install disk? Did you boot the machine first from the install disk and then run DU?

If you did and Disk Utility crashed when you were trying to use it from your install DVD, you've got a hardware problem. Disk Utility is more than likely OK.
