I have a FireWire audio device. Whenever I plug in an external hard drive on the front Firewire ports, my sound gets interrupted three or four times in a row for about a second or two until the disk mounts. Any way to avoid this?

Since you say "front Firewire ports" I have to assume you have a Mac Pro (you didn't say -- nor what OS ...).

Does it do the same thing if you plug the drive into the back FW ports? I'm going to guess no.

If I'm right, then that means the front FW ports share the same bus. So the solution is to buy a long FW cord, and leave the cord permanently plugged into the back ports, and just connect the drive to that as needed.

Sorry, yes, I have a Mac Pro and OSX 10.6.

Plugging into any FW port does the same thing, no change.
