Hi there,

Any help would be REALLY appreciated, as I don't want to format having just installed everything required for my recording studio setup.

After I boot into 10.6.5 on a brand new (though refurbished) MBP(5,3) and start any applications it seems, even mundane web browsers or whatever, within about 15 minutes the mouse starts hanging up on the screen is a bit unresponsive. The effect is similar to when your bluetooth mouse battery is running out and it loses contact, although it applies to all input devices and presumably the OS is frozen.

Within about 2 minutes of this happening repeatedly and worsening, the OS locks up and I get the roll down "You must restart" message in 6 languages or whatever.

PLEASE HELP! I literally JUST got this computer and it has to be stable as it is the hub of my recording studio. It is connected to an outboard soundcard, a midi control keyboard, and a USB hub with an external Hitachi 1TB HD (never been a problem before on my iMac and is 6 months old).

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

Here is the Problem Details and System Config, as provided by the laptop:

Have you done ANYTHING recently that could have made your system unstable?

Where did you get this MacBook Pro (Apple, e-Bay, Craig's List, etc.)?

What were the specs on your iMac (that was stable for 6 months with your setup)...including the OS version you were running on it?

Tell us as much as you can.

Thanks for replying! Your help is really appreciated!

This is a refurbished MBP, purchased directly from Apple 1 week ago. I am running the latest firmware and drivers for all peripherals.

I upgraded the RAM to a 2 x 4GB package from a reputable dealer that I have used in the past (OWC - macsales.com) and still have the original RAM set aside.

I also upgraded to a new 500GB 7200 Samsung HD for the internal.

The most recent development for my OS that pops to mind is installing a 'bad' version of Stuffit Expander, which I got from download.com. It gave error messages repeatedly on several archives which I know to be in tact and expandable. So I deleted it and installed UnRarX instead. I also had run a few installers for VST plugins (mini-applications that run within the Audio Sequencer environment - in this case Ableton Live 8)... but I had these same plugins installed before with this setup on my iMac.

The iMac worked for 2.5 years without a hitch... just for six months with the Hitachi external, so I know it's fine.

I'm hesitant to blame the whole thing on "bad RAM", which I feel is the easy answer to problems like this... there must be other alternative measures I can try than going through the whole return process.

Thanks again - please let me know what else might help?

Ok...some great information here!...but just for completeness you didn't include the OS version from your iMac (just in case it becomes important later after we try a few things...and they don't work).

In case you didn't know...what you're experiencing are "kernel panics" (that restart message in like 6 languages). Kernel panics are usually caused by three common things (I'm sure there's more as well):

- #1 is bad or incompatible ram...this is usually the problem in the overwhelming number of cases.
- #2 (on a desktop like a Mac Pro) are replaceable video cards
- #3 sometimes peripheral hardware (like you have plugged in to this computer) can cause issues.

The first thing to test is the ram. You got 2 x 4gig from OWC. One or both sticks of ram could be bad. The simplest thing to try is...remove both sticks of ram from OWC...and reinstall the original ram. Restart the computer...and see if it's stable. If so...problem solved!:)

If when you test the original ram...you still get kernel panics...then I would unplug all the peripheral hardware...restart the computer again...and see if it's stable. If so...then there's a problem with the external hardware.

Another possibility (since this computer is only 1 week old)...is the computer could be faulty in some way. New or refurbished computers can have problems...so I wouldn't eliminate this as a possibility. Worst case scenario...you take the computer to your nearest Apple Store (or ship it back to Apple) for examination...using your Applecare warranty.

Good luck...please report back with your results,:)

So... here is the latest.

I tried putting back the original RAM - kernel panics. Then I tried putting all of the original components back in, including the original HDD and the original RAM. Unfortunately, I still experienced kernel panics - many in fact. Like 6 today.

Just now I am trying unplugging all of my peripheral devices, including my sound card and external hard drive, MIDI controllers, everything. One should note that I used all of these devices on my previous computer without a problem.

I am going to see how this goes. This is my first boot with everything unplugged and all original components. Frankly, however, if the computer can not run with my studio rig plugged into it, then it's not much bloody good to me.

Starting to fear the worst...

An additional note is that the screen sometimes dims when I don't touch a key for a minute, and then when I do touch something, the screen doesn't light back up again... it just stays dim - even if I hit the brightness key.

Also, when I started the computer for the very first time out of the box (no hardware changes yet - totally "pristine") I had it up and running in OSX and closed the computer and opened it again. The screen did not un-sleep... and no matter how many times I hit keys, moved/clicked the mouse, it wouldn't wake up until I had to hard shut down with the power button.

***? That was my very first experience with this computer and it has been a kind of harbinger of things to come evidently. I'm very concerned that they are going to refuse my warranty and I will have purchased a $1800 piece of garbage.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
If all the peripherals, etc are OS X 10.6 compatible, and you are certain of this, I wouldn't bother trouble shooting if this is the case.
I would just clone the HD with Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com/ so that you have a bootable backup that you can clone back onto a replacement Mac, saving you from any reinstallation.
Then, put back the RAM and HD that came with the Mac and call Apple and tell them you received a lemon.
Once again, only if you are certain that it is not your Studio Hardware and software that is incompatible.
