External HD for Airport Extreme

I see that backing up through Time Machine to an external HD plugged into AEBS can be finicky sometimes. Do you suggest any particular HD for seamless use in backing up? Thx

The unreliability problem is nothing to do with your external drive. It is a "problem" when running Time Machine via Airport Extreme. In fact Apple do not recommend this setup.

I want to attach a External Hard drive to our router so I can use Timemachine with my MacBook Pro. I wanted to be wireless is this possible? How about through a USB port on the router?
