using CDRs to play .mov in DVD player

Macbook Pro. 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. 4GB RAM.
ok...so i'll admit before i even get started that i'm a nooB to this, but i was just curious if at all there is a way to use CDRs to burn movies and make them playable in stand-alone DVD players?

20" iMac C2D 2.16ghz, 13" MacBook 2.0ghz, 60gb iPod vid, 1gb nano
If you have toast you can burn the files as a VCD, but not all DVD players can read them
