The diagram on the left, i.e. with the router, works fine. But when I remove the router, as pictured on the right, none of the devices are able to obtain an IP address...

Anybody have any idea why the Airport won't work without a router between it and the modem??

Thanks very much

Did you re-run the Airport setup? That will be step one to make the configuration right. The Airport has multiple setup options available, so if you remove the router and also the DHCP server you will have the problem that you describe.

Take your Linksys out, plug the Moto modem right into the Airport and run the Airport setup and you should get it worked out.
