Gimp/X11 crashes iMac with OS 10.5.8

I installed Gimp & had X11 already installed (but never used). As soon as I clicked to start Gimp the whole screen showed a black & white pattern. The Gimp logo appeared then the whole screen was just this strange pattern. I couldn't get rid of it & had to switch the machine off & restart.
