Thanks in advance for any help on this problem!

I have recently bought a BenQ G2222HDL 22" external display. I'm running a 13" 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro. I also bought a DVI cable and a DVI to Mini-DisplayPort convertor.

The macbook detects the display when plugged in; I'm able to get any resolution up to and including 1360x768. Of course, the external display is poor quality. If I move up to 1600x900 or 1920x1080, the external display is just blank. The box says that the display supports 1920x1080 resolutions.

I then bought a VGA cable and Mini-DisplayPort adaptor and all resolutions work ok.

Any ideas on how I might go about getting the better quality DVI mode to work? Again, many thanks in advance..

Your Mac's Specs

First thing to do is open up the owner's manual and verify the resolutions it will support through each port.

Assuming that the DVI port does support those resolutions, can only guess... my first pick would be the DVI cable at fault. Could be the adapter or the BenQ port. Only way to rule out the BenQ port is to try the adapter & cable on another monitor.
