iTunes Library = Damaged?

15" Powerbook, 1.67GHz, 100GB HD, 1GB RAM, 128MB Video. 20GB iPod. 512MB iPod Shuffle. 80GB ipod
i booted up the old fruit, its actually brand new, and upon opening itunes, i recieved a message that my library is damaged. what exactly does this mean? what am i suppoused to do? have i really lost the 40 gb of music that i spent hours ripping?

also, is there a program like ephpod that works with itunes 4.9 so i can put the music from my ipod onto my computer?
