Two more RAM questions for you gurus!

Guys-

I have an 867mhz G4 Powerbook with only 256mb of RAM.

I'm about to finally buy some more.

(1) Since only 128mb of my current ram is built-in, does this mean that the other 256mb occupies the slot I would fill with the new RAM I buy?

(2) I've heard lots of different figures for the max RAM my machine can use. Can my computer accept more than 640mb? Is there no point in buying one gig of ram?

Thanks!

You have 2 memory slots in your powerbook. One of them is permanent (the 128 onboard) and the other slot you have 128mb in. You will have to remove the 128 card to upgrade the ram.

You can get up to 1152mb of ram in the computer (PC2100 DDR266 RAM)

Oops! I should have mentioned it's a 12" G4 867 pb. I got it right when the 12" pbs first came out.

Looks like a total of 640 is what I can afford. I was really hoping to keep all 128mb.

What do you guys think, is it pointless to upgrade from 256 to 640 if I can't afford the 1gig?

It's a big help guys.

Thanks!

I think you'd notice a big improvement doing 256 to 640. One thing, open your activity monitor, and watch your ram usage as you go through the day. More ram won't help at all if you don't use what you already. However, I think a typical user should have 512MB, more if you do heavy design work. 640 would most likely make a fair difference in your system.
