sudden problems with Time Machine

After working fine for all this time, Time Machine is giving me all kinds of grief. It often hangs after a few good sessions, stalling in the "calculating changes" stage. It seems to take Finder down with it, too. Now, it's refusing to start. Rebooting may or may not fix it.

I've run Disk Utility and Drive Genius on both my system disk and my TM disk; no problems uncovered.

Are there any utilities to "clean up" Time Machine? Or, can I zip up my current backup history and somehow start over?

Thanks for any help.

What do the log files say?
Open the console.app and check for backup error messages.

My experience with TM is that you should not interupt the process..... Let it finish.

Start with checking the log files .

What specifically should I be looking for? I don't see anything that looks like it came from Time Machine.

Easy to say, but when it hangs indefinitely, sometimes I have to reboot.

Look for entries where " Sender " is com.apple.backupd ( 2nd column )

Start a backup and follow the entries in the logfile ....

Do any of these mean anything to you? I can't really decipher them.

They don't mean anything to me as I am not technical, but now ŵe have something to search for ....

Googling for "failed to make snapshot container " seems to be a common error.

One suggestion is to remove the spaces from your disk name "1 TB HD" ...
