i'm pretty sure someone we know and don't trust put a keylogger on my mac. if there's something on there, how do i detect what's already been installed, and get rid of it?

ps: i can't reinstall the whole system. disk issues.

here's screen shots of my activity monitor for all processes if this helps

The idea of keylogger programs is to make them inviible one the software has been installed. Only way to beat it is reformat the hard drive, even zeroing, and doing a clean install.

Of course all your files and applications will be gone but that is the price for allowing someone else access to your computer and password.

Not to seem callous or uncaring, but yeah what harryb said. And while you're at it, remove iAntiVirus -- there are no viruses for the Mac, and it's just taking up resources needlessly.

ok, thank you for the replies.

i have snow leopard on my computer installed by a friend who lives far away so i don't have access to the disk. if i put all my files onto an external harddrive to put back onto the computer after wiping it clean, will i be able to save snow leopard onto their too? how big of a harddrive will i need to hold everything? i have tons of picture on my computer.

also, i don't have a working disk drive, it's broken. is there a way to wipe my computer clean and reinstall the harddrive/computer without using that disk?

The problem backing up SL also backs up the keylogging program. Go out and buy your own SL disc, format amnd zero the disc and do your own install. It is simple and easy way to start learning and managing your own computer.

If you have to buy a new hard drive, remember to format and partition GUID before installing Sl. Installing SL from another's disc is really a no-no. Called piracy.

how can i wipe my mac clean without deleting OSx? HELP! :(

i want to wipe my mac clean to the greatest extent possible without needing to reinstall the OSx, in order to get rid of a keylogger on my system that is likely installed on my computer by someone who has hacked the password of my computer.

+ My disk drive is broken and I don't know anyone else who has a mac, so there's no way for me to reinstall my system off of a disk.

+ A friend put Snow Leopard on my computer from their family pack disk, and they're now far away. I don't want to lose the Snow Leopard OSx.

Basically I want to clean it as much as possible to get rid of the keylogger without needing a disk to reinstall a lost OSx. If he put that keylogger on my system, he has it sending info remotely to him via email or however it works.

That's illegal, so you have a pirated copy of OS X. Not feeling sorry for you at the moment.

Will a program like peek-a-boo reveal a keylogger on a mac? please look ..screenshots

i got rid of one that was definitely a keylogger called loggerdaemon, it's part of a keylogger called keybagger, but i am also concerned about one called cron. is that a keylogger? are there any keyloggers that would not show up in this peek-a-boo program? i know it even reveals spector, but i want to make sure i have all my bases covered.

ps:...i'm not looking at porn or anything, just saying lol, i have someone i really don't like who has computer skills, hacked my computer password in the past, has used my computer, and is crazy enough that he'd put a keylogger on my comp to spy on me, read my chats, etc.

Merged your threads. No need to start on a new one on the same topic.

it wasn't an illegal copy, it was a family pack, where you spend more money but you get the license to put it on more than one computer. i would never steal software. it was this: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC574Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY. you can install it on up to 5 computers.

schweb, thanks. i wasn't sure where i should put this, if it should have been a new thread or not due to the mention of peek-a-boo.

The family pack is only for computers owned by you in your immediate household. A friend doesn't count, especially one who doesn't live there.

So yes, you have an illegal, pirated copy of OS X. I suggest you buy one.

Ok, not to try and hijack the thread or anything....

...but how would one know if they had a keylogger on their computer? Is there any real way to find out first like a case with a virus or a torjan?

Keyloggers don't just sprout up like mushrooms.

You'd only have one if someone you don't trust (like, say, a friend who's into software piracy) had access to your computer. Or if you're in the habit of installing questionable software (like, say, pirated software) that you didn't get directly from a legitimate developer.

Oh! Ok thank you! I'm rather sure then that I'm more or less in the clear :)

No one really uses my computer and even have a guest account in the very rare instance that I need to let someone else you use it, and am very careful what I install.

Thanks again for clearing that up!

Now, why would it make a difference where the license owners live? Last year, I was going to do the same thing with some people from work, as in share a license. If you pay, how is it illegal ?... those are some mighty fine semantics at work right there, if you asked me.

Even if there were a clause stating that license owners had to be family related or live in the same house... what if one of the people whom had the license, moved ? Should they then have to purchase another copy? Sounds like a ludicrous idea to me. Just sayin.

Doug
