Whenever I try to check for software updates, either by manually initiating (clicking on Check Now button) or by regularly scheduled setting, the progress bar starts, soon stops progressing and I get a window saying "A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again." It also gives me a button to run diagnostics, but all I learn there is that my internet connection is fine. (Which I already knew, because I'm constantly using it.) Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated!

What version of OSX are you using? If it's anything but the latest version of that particular release, try to download the combo-update directly from the Apple site and do the update that way. Once finished, try the SW updater again and see if it behaves any better..
