    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. Pushy iTunes and reluctant VLC

Hi folks,

I'm gettin along with getting around on mac pretty well, but this thing is pretty puzzling.
When I try to open a clip, recorded from a camera (Panasonic DMC FT1- makes AVHCD clips with a .MTS file extension) it opens up iTunes, but doesn't start to play. OK, I installed VLC, and opened one .MTS file with a "Open With" and chose VLC, and it opened and played, and changed the icon _for that perticular file_ only (?). If I try to open that SAME file again, it opens up in VLC, but the rest of the files in that directory (same format, recorded by the same device with the same codec settings), are still showing up as gray console-like windows and keep opening iTunes (and failing to play).

Please help. Doesn't VLC realise that he is in charge of ALL of the .MTS files? Is there a setting in iTunes that makes it stop being so nosy?
I've looked through the options of both VLC and iTunes, and found nothing.

Any clues?

Thanx a bunch! :)

PS: Oh, Mac osx 10.6.3 here. (Macbook pro if it makes a difference)

Find one of the MTS files. Right-click on it and go to Open With. Scroll down to 'Other' and click it. Find VLC in the list, but this time make sure the "Always open with" box is checked.

In the Finder, hightlight the file, and use the Command-I button (get info). Look down mid way and you'll see the "Open with:" popup item. Choose VLC and then click on the "Change All...". It will prompt you to confirm you want that extension opened in your new default.

EDIT: cwa107 beat me to the punch by one minute. LOL!
