PowerMac G4 400MHz 896MB RAM WOOHOO
Hi All,

Recently I acquired an old Powermac G4 running at 400Mhz and a 896MB of RAM. It has 10.4.11 installed and can barely churn out a decent tabbed web-browsing session. So before I list this puppy on eBay and buy a newer G4, what are the things I can do with such an old and slow machine? I have a pretty good file server already running on my network (freeNAS) , and I don't play legacy mac games. I do all my office work on a laptop and watch all my media on an htpc. So I guess what I am asking is for some suggestions (ANY suggestion) as to what to do with this rotten apple. Thanks All

Strip it out, and turn it into a little cupboard/ box to keep remotes etc in, also in the fold down access panel turn that into a drinks holder!
lolol

Surely in NJ there are any number of disadvantaged kids who would appreciate your G4. Contact welfare organisations such as St Vincent De Paul, the Salvation Army and local church op shops. They will find an appreciative owner have no doubt.

Never a tower mate as a kellick - too big to toss overboard.

I'm quite taken with your suggestion, as I'm trying to think what to do with my faithful old G3 b/w which has not been used for over a year. I'll strip out the reusable components like the two HD's and RAM, plus the Zip drive etc, but the case.

A drinks cabinet. Wow, that would get the party wannabes talking! "I say, have you seen hughvane's latest avante garde retro idea?" Your name, as being the inventor of the idea, will appear in a little neon strip moving across the bottom of the cabinet.

What?! NO! Don't gut the little faithful G3! A dead one maybe, but not that cute little thing! LOL Sorry, but seriously, I bet you could find a dead one to use instead of killing that one. :p

No, no, not my G3 iMac, but the b/w G3 tower. I've just wound up the rubber bands, re-stoked the boiler coals, and cranked the old girl into OS 9.2 life, then into OS X. This is a machine into which I poured about NZ$600 some years ago. Other than a very occasional kernel panic (RAM), it's never failed me, even with all the used bits & pieces I've put into it.

I reckon there'd be a real market for redundant Mac tower cases converted into mini drinks cabinets but I don't have the requisite skills to do the work.

I know what machine we're talking about. ;) But I just don't think gutting a faithful machine to turn into a drinks cabinet is very nice. ;D Anyway, wound up the rubber bands and re stoked the boiler coals? That's funny.

P.S. Sure, gutting a PowerMac G3 to turn into a drinks cabinet is an interesting idea...But look at this! Unless your old Mac is dead as a doornail, don't kill it! :Smirk:
