Hi All,

I recently was given an old G4 and the HDD sounds like its gunna go any day now. I really want to clone that bad boy (130GB) on a nice 250 -320 GB HDD , is this possible with MAC OS? Can I use clonezilla or do you guys/girls recommend something different? Thanks

And be aware some old G4's, you have not supplied the model details alas, will recognise only up to 128GB on the hard drive.

Hey Thanks for the replies. Sorry for the late response, school has been a little hectic lately. OK so I tried carboncopy with a 250gb hdd via a usb adapter..lets just say it was slow as sh!t got like 2gb worth in 3 hours... Now I fully understand the whole hdd cap with old mac's... my model is PowerMac3,1 ( if thats a model number idk according to sys info thats what is stated). So yea if I am hdd restricted then can I just use a 130gb hdd with carbon copy via ide cable? Thanks All

Since your external Hard Drive is connected Via USB, do remember the USB on a old Power Mac is 1.1. That is going to slow any file transfers WAY down. If you were going to keep the PowerMac I would invest in a USB 2.0 PCI card. Another way to speed things up with an external drive is purchase a FireWire 400 external enclosure. Then it would be many times faster transferring files to and from that external.
