Yes you can...but the "swapping" choices are limited.

No list that I'm aware of. This is strictly an "off the books" sort of upgrade. Not officially sanctioned by anyone...something you won't find many owners of Mac Pro's doing and an upgrade that may cost you $300-$500 dollars (maybe more...maybe less) depending how you are able to source the cpu's.

But on the positive side...you get a small cpu speed bump...and can increase the 2006 Mac Pro from 4 cores to 8 cores.:)

You need to do some internet searching on the topic (upgrade procedure) & internet searching for the parts. If you're capable of doing the upgrade...I'm sure your capable of doing the internet searching!;)

You can use the Quad Core processors, Intel part numbers are X5365 for the 3GHz version and X5355 for the 2.66GHz version. Expect to pay as much as what your Mac Pro is worth however. These are the only two Quad Core processors that will work.

Hardest part of the job is accessing the torx screws holding down the heat sinks. You will need at least a 10" driver for the job. As Nick advises, use Goodle as there are several how to's about with photos.
