Hi,

I am currently experiencing slow Internet speeds on my MBP. I have read that people use OpenDNS to solve this issue.

How does it work and is it safe to connect to a public dns?

Thanks people.

I use it and have for quite a while. I like it mostly because it has URL typo correction which is great for people like me who give their delete key a good workout. As for whether or not it will work for you - it's only going to help if DNS is the problem. It can't hurt to give it a try though. The IPs are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 (you can also find these at the bottom of any OpenDNS page).

There's also Google's Public DNS but I haven't used it (I'm of the mindset that if something works for you, don't change it) so I'll let someone else comment on it.

I use OpenDNS for much the same reason that vansmith uses it. Overall I think it's a little snappier than my cable provider's DNS.

You can get more info here: OpenDNS | Internet Navigation And Security

But, it's not going to speed your internet dramatically so if you're net is really slow, it's either your package is too low or there's something wrong.

As for Google DNS, I used that for a little bit, but I had HUGE problems with Netflix and Hulu streaming when I used it. Apparently it's a known issue for some people. I had other problems too with some sites not working etc, but I guess that's why Google's Public DNS is still "beta" or experimental.

That's awesome, thanks for the replies, just wanted to know that other people used it so I would know it was safe! Thanks, I'll give it a shot!

Cheers.

There are a whole bunch of us here that made the switch to OpenDNS a couple of years ago.

Found it solving several problems at the time versus using some of the ISPs DNS.

DNS Speed

Download and use Namebench. It will tell you the fastest DNS servers for your locale.
