I see they have BTguard online, coasting i think $5.95 a month. Is there any non-monthly torrent privacy programs for OSX worth checking out?

May I ask why? If you're downloading something illegal, stop. If it's legal, why do you need the privacy?

Vansmith's legal zeal aside, Transmission. Tick the box for "use encryption" and "ignore unencrypted peers" in the preferences.

Legal zeal has nothing to do with it. This forum has very clear rules on illegal activity.

That is true, however it does not apply in this case. Illegal activities were never mentioned. A simple question was asked, a simple answer was given.

Correct. I did not however accuse the poster of nefarious actions as I asked about both possibilities (it's either legal or it's not). I believe my questions were legitimate - if it's illegal, don't do it and then you won't have to worry about encrypting your traffic. If it's legal, why is there such a concern about encrypting your traffic?

Vansmith had/has a right to point that out since it is a forum rule and it's really good advice. I see people all the time with Windows systems have their system Destroyed playing with certain torrents. So to me it's good advice period.

I agree the OP said nothing about piracy but Van's warning is a reminder just in case of the forum rules.

You answered his question and it should have been left at that.

True, and my subtle jab wasn't meant to be taken really as anything more than a friendly poke before I answered the question. It's none of your business why he wants to use encryption. If the contents of your emails aren't private, why do you connect using SSL? If you're purchasing legal goods, what does it matter if you're using SSL.

Encryption is a good thing. Tick both boxes, be smart about what you're torrenting.

I hope you don't think me being a jerk, but truly I use SSL because my ISP will not send or receive my email without SSL! :D

I get your point about privacy though.

It's all good. :)

(I encrypt my emails because there is personal info in them but regardless, your emails are sitting on someone else's server ;). I use SSL for online purchases because I use my credit card.)

Bad analogy. There's lots of uses for email, like transacting sensitive data (PHI, identity info like SSNs, credit card data, etc...). Email is a communication medium and there's plenty of legitimate uses for encryption in that case.

Torrents have many uses too, but more often than not, they're used for sharing files. In that case, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask why you're concerned about privacy if you're downloading something benign or legal. Especially if you're conscientious about your standing as the member of a forum.

Said file could have personal information. Said file(s) could give away something about yourself that you don't want other people finding out, like say, too much porn. Maybe you're just paranoid, and don't want people knowing who you are or what you're doing.

Maybe it doesn't matter, because he didn't say, "hey guys, so I'm trying to download CS5, and I realllllly don't want to get caught... what's the best torrent program out there?"

I didn't say it was unreasonable to ask. I just put that question aside and gave the answer that the question asked for.

And yea van, we're still good, I wasn't trying to start anything. Cheers, mate!

I think that this thread has gotten a lot more "traction" then it probably needs!;)

Agreed. Long story, made short - no one should be criticized for asking for specifics before answering a dubious question. That's all I'm saying and I'm done at this point.

Agreed!

Some folks may have the answer to a question asked and be hesitant of answering because of their own conscience.

There are just some activities that are used all too often for illegal purposes. Some of those quite willing to help (myself included) may need at least some assurance that the answer is not being used for nefarious activities before providing that answer. This is not too much to ask.

If the OP is that worried, why not use a VPN. This can be done for free.

My sentiments exactly. And to be honest, it's quite hard to ask what their intent is without sounding as if you're accusing them of misdeeds.

Generally we shouldn't assume someone is doing something illegal unless they come right out and state it. Give the person the benefit of the doubt until you need to do otherwise.

Asking a question is one thing, but we need to make sure that we don't make people feel like criminals when there's no need to do so.

Just think to yourself how you would want to be treated if you asked a similar question.

And with that said, I'm going to lock this thread as its main point has passed.
