Better for Travel?

Is it better to store a laptop in transit flat (say in a duffel bag) or vertical (laptop backpack)?

Is one way better for the hard drive?

While that is a nice article, it only says to store your laptop away from heat and direct sunlight, do not shake it, take out the battery, and to put padding around it in a bag with straps so you don't drop it... but it says nothing about the orientation of the laptop.

Look at it this way... you laptop survived the trip from Shenzhen China to your location and it probably was subject to a wide variety of orientations along the trip. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it!

Well I will say this.

In most people's Macbooks they store it on the desk at home. So that's the hard drive in the flat horizontal position. But in the imac which we all know is made with some notebook parts, the hard drive is pretty much in the vertical position 99% of the time.

So same hard drives and proof that in either position they will keep and work just fine. Sn it'd just put the notebook in your bag in the day that gives it the most cushioning to protect from bumps and scratches.

If you've ever taken a hard drive apart, the answer is pretty clear - it really doesn't matter.

When the power is removed, the heads park and don't make contact with the platters. So, it doesn't matter how its oriented, as long as it's powered down (or sleeping - in that case, the drive is still powered down and parked).

Wow! You had time to actually read the article? That's amazing, or else you read quickly.

Really, the point is; you can find the answer using a search engine if you have enough time.

A search engine is good if you know what to ask it. But if you totally have to clue what to search for then a search engine is useless.

And that's a very good point. One more reason we need to be patient with new folks who come to our forums asking for help. Some of them as the8thark points out don't know what to search for or even sometimes what to ask us.
