Can I install Lion?

Hi,

I recently bought a 13" MBP 2.4. My question is, when Lion becomes available, can I upgrade my MBP? If so, how and where etc can I do it.

Do the laptop OS work the same as iPhone for example when the iPhone iOS4 was released users with 3GS could upgrade and get nearly all the features?

Basically, can upgrade Snow Leopard to get features such as Mac Store and ?Mission Control? I think they call it, without installing Lion?

What do people think of Lion?

Do you know what year your MBP is? or the model? This will help greatly in finding out if you can upgrade. Also i'm pretty sure that mission control will be tied to Lion, but I think I remember Steve Jobs saying in his latest keynotes that you will be able to download Mac Store for earlier versions of OSX and before Lion comes out

Right now almost a year before Lion's launch, we do not know very much. Apple is very secretive. I will bet $$$ though that Lion will install and run just fine on your MBP. We right now have no reason to even believe that Lion will not install on any Intel Mac. I can say though almost for sure it will install on most all Intel Macs in the past 2-3 years.

App Store will be available on Snow Leopard soon. Mission Control will not though and Lion will have a LOT of more changes, improvements and features besides just those two you mentioned. As it gets closer to next summer, more will be revealed.

Lion OS will be released in summer, 2011. What about upgrade - I'm not aware of technical aspects, but may assume, that upgrading from 10.6 will cost about $29 (as it was with upgrading to leopard), if you have later OS, probably, you will need to pay more. But I guess its worth it

Why would you assume that? SL was the first $29 Upgrade. All previous ones (well, of recent vintage) were $129. I think the higher price is a safer assumption, but we'll know soon enough. SL did not add lots of features, just made mostly performance enhancements. If Lion is a true makeover, it will cost more.

I agree. There is no reason to believe that Lion is going to be a $29 upgrade as Snow Leopard was. Remember, when Apple was touting Snow Leopard they stated there would not be a great amount of difference between it and Leopard. Lion (from what we know) will be a major upgrade. My guess is that Lion will be at least $129 as stated by others.

I'm going to stick my neck out...and predict that OS 10.7 Lion will cost more than we would like...and that it's going to cost more than the $129 we've seen from previous major updates...and say that Lion is going to cost us $149.

I think that Apple gave us a break by only charging $29 for 10.6...so they're going to get us back by charging more than $129 for Lion. I hope I'm wrong!

And ill go the other way. I think  have seen the light. Of late with there pricing structure they have been good.
I think they will surprise us and keep it low.
Not sure at what low price, but it will be lowish lol

Here's the historical cost for OS X (US dollars):

- 10.0 Cheetah...$129
- 10.1 Puma...Free
- 10.2 Jaguar...
- 10.3 Panther...
- 10.4 Tiger...$129
- 10.5 Leopard...$129
- 10.6 Snow Leopard...$29
- 10.7 Lion...???

I couldn't remember or find reliable internet sources for the cost of 10.2 Jaguar & 10.3 Panther...maybe someone else can fill in the gaps.

It just makes sense if someone has an Intel Mac that is capable of running SL, then Lion will install with no problem.

OSX upgrades are slightly different than iOS on 3Gs vs. iPhone4. It's an all-or-nothing move. You either have SL or you move up to Lion. As I stated above, your Mac will either handle SL and Lion or it won't be able to install either.

As mentioned, Lion won't come out until sometime 2011. Most likely late Spring or Summer. So no one really knows what to think of the OS as a whole, other than the few features we saw in the keynote. Not enough to really go off of yet.


I agree that SL wasn't as substantial an upgrade as Lion will be. I'm expecting 10.7 to be $100 USD or more. But like Nick, I'd be happy to be wrong if it means it will be available for less $$$.

Agree with Nick +$129. SL was a little more than an update. Lion will be a new OS with no Java, reported iPad etc compatibilities.

Let's not (accidentally) spread misinformation. Lion may not ship with an Apple-produced runtime engine, but that's not the same as saying "no Java."

Most likely what will happen is that Sun (or the open-source community) will take over supplying a more-updated version of Java that will run on Lion.

I think that goes without saying, and is pretty much the same with every other modern platform/OS. And if Sun/Oracle really wants to maintain Java's viability, I'm sure it will be released post-haste.

The Mac App Store will be available on Snow Leopard and above. That's the only new feature that will be available to both SL and Lion.

I only hope that if Oracle takes over distribution of Java they keep all of the things that Apple added to make Java feel more at home on the Mac. I'd rather not have to depend on X11 for instance when running Java applications.
