The warranty does not cover accidental damage. Sitting on one's iPod 4g is considered accidental damage. ![:\](/mac_images/images/smilies/Undecided.png "Undecided :\")
If you think you can replace the screen yourself, go to iFixit: The free repair manual and look up the step by step instructions. Also while you're there, you can see if they have replacement screens on hand and what the cost would be.

Did you pay for it with your credit card? Some credit cards will extend the manufacturer's warranty if you paid with it - and some (like my Amex Card) will even cover accidental damage. Otherwise you're out of luck with Target and Apple.
