When I plug my iPhone 4 into my MacBook Pro and call up iTunes, the left margin of the screen shows, next to "Apps," a small oval with the number 10 in it. What does that mean? I have a lot more apps than 10 on all of my Apple devices. TIA.

That they have newer version of certain apps and it wants you to update them?

I don't think so, since my iPhone always shows any apps that have updates available, and I immediately update them.

When I click on the Apps line with the "10" in it, it shows me all the apps I've downloaded on my iPhone and iPad.

Mine is like that too...I just realized. I don't have every app on my iPhone though.

It is how many updates you have. See the bottom right corner of CrimsonRequiem's screen shot. 22 updates corresponds to the number "22" in the left margin.
When you update on your phone, it doesn't automatically update the same apps that are backed up on your Mac. It's kind of like double work because you have to update apps on your phone/iPod/iPad AND on your Mac separately. I have the same thing with my iPad. Just did 2 updates on the Mac today after I plugged in the iPad.

Click the updates link and update them. The number will go away. Simple.

That's not true. If you update the app on your phone, when you sync them, it will copy the newer version to your computer.

The only time you have to update your computer separately is if you have apps on your computer that you don't have on your phone or you don't update through your phone.

When you see the bubble next to Apps with a number..click on Apps, then "XX Updates Available" at the bottom to go to the update page and then have iTunes update all of the applications..they'll be downloaded and the bubble should disappear..

A bubble next to Podcasts shows how many unheard/unplayed podcasts you have..

Regards

I didn't realize the 2 updates I did this morning on my MBP hadn't been done yet on my iPad. Hence the misunderstanding in the process. It does happen a lot to me because I seldom plug my iPad into the MBP, so I'll usually see that updates are waiting for an app on my Mac and I'll also see it later on my iPad when I go into the App Store.
Thanks for that tip! :)
