So in other words, Microsoft also desires to know who you (as in the Mac user) are and your location. Someone there (@MS) has developed a plan.

Yes I'm sure it's a giant conspiracy. I mean it's not like activation hasn't existed for um, years now anyway or like Adobe hasn't been using it for awhile in the Mac products....

Actually, there's several publishers for the Mac who require activation and were doing it before MS: Adobe and Logos come to mind (and there may be more).

I installed my copy of Office 2010 several weeks ago and it automatically activated itself over the net. Absolutely painless and quick. Much less so then the Flu shot I got recently. ;P

I will burst the drama bubble in layman's terms.. The point was, Microsoft has never required activation (as outlined in the article) with Office for Mac, until this new version. The reason behind Microsoft's decision to do this is most likely related to a marketing strategy and not a conspiracy.

Or it could be MS's way to combat software piracy. Sure we all know an activation key will not stop the pirates. But does MS realise this?

Also a marketing strategy. As for the question, do they realize this?.. Good point.
