My 3 year old iMac is running very slow; opening files and apps as well as accessing internet There are 3 accounts on this Mac. My daughter's account is extremely slow. The disk drive is working hard for everyntask.

I've run disk permissions and have about 25 gigs of 250 remaining.

I'm not new to macs, however this is the 1st time with issues like this? Any suggestions on actions to take?

Thanks

The almost full hard drive is probably the problem. You only have about 10% free...which is getting pretty low. I would recommend deleting a bunch of stuff from the hard drive if possible...or upgrading to a bigger HD.

Slow imac

What I'm finding is Internet access is really slow on my daughter's account but not then others. I've cleared safari cache but no improvement.

I'm not exactly sure why just this one account is slower than the others...but the 90% (or more) full hard drive already is...or soon will effect all accounts.

Just for clarification - is the browser itself slow or is your connection slow? Also, have you tried another browser?

At three years old, that hard drive may be due for replacement. That's a cheap option.

Well, if this helps anything, Macs use whatever remaining space on your hard drive as virtual RAM/memory. Not only will things "in general" slow down because of your drive being filled almost to capacity (mechanically it will slow down as it has to "look harder" for things) but now that you've only got 25GB's available of 250, then some of your virtual RAM may be "down" too...which would also slow the machine down.

Food for thought.
