Hey all,

I have a problem with my trash as it seems.
I checked the forums and saw a lot of people before me had problems putting their trash in the trash bin, alltho with those people it gave a warning that the item would be deleted right away.

Here is my problem:

As soon as I try to move something to the trash, I hear the empty trash sound (without giving a warning, and yes i checked the warning under prefences ;) ) and when i check the trash can, nothing's in there. Also, my disk space doesn't increase, so it doesn't actually remove the file from the hard drive. *edit: It does remove it from the directory it was when deleting!

I tried things that helped people with (merely) similar problems found on this and other forums, including repairing disk permissions, remaking the .Trash and .Trashes folders, removing com.apple.finder.plist (prefences file) but nothing seems to work! I'm about to reinstall OSX alltogeather, but please if any of you has some other suggestions let me know!

Thanx,

pimsche

I am experiencing the exact same problem! I am running MAC OS X 10.7.4. Did you find a way to solve it out? I have tried many pieces of advice that I found on the internet but none of them fixed my problem.

Actually you don't need to delete the .Trash folder. The problem is you probably don't have read/write permission for it.
Open a Terminal and type: ls -la
Should look something like this: drwx------ 2 staff 68B Aug 28 13:54 .Trash/
If not type: sudo chmod +w ~/.Trash
That should fix it.

Edit: those are lower case L's in the first command

The first thing didn't work out for me, the sentence you mentioned did not appear. I tried the other way, but after typing my password the sentence appeared:
chmod: /Users/louisedrivsholm/.Trash: No such file or directory

Do you know why this happens? It is pretty frustrating!
Thank you for your help, btw!

It appears you don't have a Trash. Did you delete it as per previous posts? If so did you do a restart?
Do a restart and if still no Trash, open Terminal and type: mkdir .Trash
What that does is make a Trash directory and the preceding period makes it invisible to Finder, the way it's supposed to be.

Actually I found another way to fix it! Somehow I did not have permission to 'read and write', only to 'read'. I changed that and now it is possible for me to put documents etc. in the trash bin without them being automatically deleted! But thank you for all of your help!

Is it btw. a problem that I dont have a trash as you describe? Do I have to follow your instructions anyways? - just to be sure. Would you recommend that?

Depends on what OS you're running. I don't know about Lion or MLion and what they have.
Snow Leopard and below actually have 2 trashes - .Trash in the home folder and .Trashes for network drives (usb, ethernet etc)
