I have an odd issue I've never seen before. My 1st generation macbook pro is really slow when I first start the computer. When I say "Really" I mean minutes to open programs. The odd thing about it is that the longer the computer stays on the faster it becomes. I thought zapping the pram would help so I did, 4 times. Then it took several extra minutes for the OS to load and when I opened "mail" that was another 10 minutes. It gets faster over the next few hours and by the time a day rolls by it's almost normal speed.
