OS 10.5.6 system software conflicts

I’ve created a software issue of my own making. When I installed a retail version of OS 10.5.6 on my 17” Laptop Pro (2.16 Ghz Intel Core Duo Processor, 2GB memory), I lost all of my data so I did a clean install of OS 10.5.6. Not a big problem as I had all of my data backed up on hard drives, memory sticks or discs. I than updated OS 10.5.6 to 10.5.8 and than proceeded to down loaded software and programs. Most downloads worked except when I tried to copy Address Book from OS 10.4.9. it said that it could not open that version. I could not go back to 10.5.6 as I updated to 10.5.8. When I downloaded software from iLife’08 from the disc I could not get iMovie to recognize camera that I was trying to copy a video from. Said I could not use this version iMovie version with this Mac OS version. The iPhoto program works fine with this OS system. Besides humbling me more than I am now, could somebody help me out of this dilemma?

I'm not sure I understand your problem? Since you now have Leopard 10.5.8 installed from the retail DVD, (10.5.6 updated to .8) you should have also installed the applications which were included on the Leopard disk. If you're trying to use applications from Tiger (iPhoto, iMovie, address book, and so on) they're not going to work with Leopard. However, all your data is still intact. Just transfer the data (photos, addresses, etc) not the applications themselves.

iMovie problem still there

Thanks for your reply. Some issues resolved by reinstalling optional item on OS 10.5.6 disc. Still have the issue with iMovie downloaded from iLife ‘8 disc. It still indicates “You cannot use this version of the application of iMovie with this version of Mac OS X”. Don’t understand, as iLife’8 should work with OS 10.5.8. My Laptop Pro has a 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo Processor, 2GB memory, and about 89 GB of free space on the hard drive. I should be able to run that program shouldn’t I?

FYI: "download" implies you are transferring some data from the internet to your computer, such as a new application that is available for download.

Once you have "downloaded" the application or you have an application on a CD (for example) and you would like to use it on your computer, you would then "install" the application.

"Download" and "install" do not even remotely imply the same thing.

If you are indeed "downloading" iMovie, then I would suggest you "install" it from the discs that came with your machine, the retail copy of iLife you purchased or head out and purchase your own legitimate copy of it. In fact with the new version, just out today (for $49 I heard though I haven't verified it yet), that sounds like a really good idea.

There's no telling why some copy of it downloaded from the internet will not work.

If this is not a "downloaded" copy, where are you getting it? e.g. What disc are you using to install it from?

Sorry for my computer language ignorance. I did not down load from internet. The disc I used to download iMovie along with iPhoto & iDVD were from a hard disc "iLife'8, CPU Drop In DVD" purchased on eBay. iPhoto works fine. It is iMovie that shows “You cannot use this version of the application of iMovie with this version of Mac OS X” when I try to open program.
