• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I use Final Cut Express to edit video I have shot, export as (un-contained) .mov files and burn to DVD using iDVD. Now I want just one scene from that project but cannot find the FCE files. I have the DVD and .cdr file. Is it possible to somehow copy only part of the DVD?

If you setup chapters when you originally made the dvd (I honestly don't know about iDVDs support of chapters, I use DVD Studio Pro) - then and what you want falls in a given chapter, you can use handbrake to just rip that one chapter.

Failing that, my thought ATM is that you will have to rip the entire video and just select the clip you want in FCE or use a tool like MPegStreamClip to re-transcode into a new file (possibly different codec/container since FCE likes .mov and handbrake likes .mp4 and .mkv) and while doing that just specify the range of video you want for the new file (MPegStreamClip has a very crude selection tool for a single set of in/out points - works perfectly for what you'd want in the long run)
