Adding printer for brand new MacBook pro

I'm brand new MacBook pro owner (yesterday). No pevious mac experience. No classes yet at all.
Came home to set up. wanted to get mac to connect to existing printer on home wireless network. Can't get any printer list to show up. Used IP address to fill in the "new printer" screen. Kept saying network busy. I know network and printer are working - just printed using my pc.

How do you have the printer hooked up wireless ,ethernet or usb and to what a router,
print server or router/modem and what model is the printer.
