Hi,

Today I wanted to repair permissions on my Mac (running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4) and I tried opening Disk Utility and it gave an error. I rebooted my computer to see if that would take care of the problem, I ran disk permissions through the Terminal to see if that would fix the issue, I downloaded the third-party app called Pacifist to extract the Disk Utility.app from the install disk to see if replacing it would work, and I moved the plist file for Disk Utility to another location...nothing worked.

I am getting the following error when I try to open Disk Utility. Below that you will see the error for Activity Monitor.

No. The combo update will just update everything as needed and will hopefully resolve the problem you're having with Disk Utility and the Activity Monitor. Let us know.

As a suggestion whenever the OS is updated, go to the Apple web site and download the Combo Updater. Takes a little longer but is much, much more reliable than using Software Updates.

Yep, that's what I am doing, per the link provided by the moderator. I'm downloading straight from the site.

Hey guys,

I downloaded the Combo Update per your suggestions but it didn't work.

Then I popped the Snow Leopard install disk in and installed from a previous Time Machine backup (not a fresh install). Initially, I thought it did the job (Disk Utility and Activity Monitor worked again), but other bugs began popping up. iTunes, for instance, will not open properly anymore nor will the automatic Software Update feature.

I have (reluctantly) decided to do a clean install of Snow Leopard. But, before I do...

After I restored my Mac from the previous backup tonight, Time Machine began creating a huge backup (in the 200 GIG range) and it never completed. So the last backup is actually a backup "in progress". The last full backup was completed around 7 PM Saturday.

Where the next question is going is this...

If I do a clean install of Snow Leopard, and use Migration Assistant, will it migrate data from the last FULL backup of Time Machine (the 7 PM one from Saturday) or will it try to pull from the incomplete backup?

I just do not want to re-install Snow Leopard and then attempt to get my data back where it needs to be only to be unable to because of a partial backup being in the way, instead of a full backup with everything. Does Migration Assistant even let you choose which backup to use?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on what my next move should be. I have a ton of data on my external hard drive that needs to be put back in place if I do a clean install.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
You can select which time machine backup you are restoring from, but the fastest and safest way would be to restore from the oldest working backup, and then restore your documents, movies, music and photos from your latest backup.

I personally would do a clean install, and re-install all your 3rd party applications, and then just restore the documents, movies, music and photos.
