How to Write Music in GarageBand

Hi!
I am relatively new to GarageBand. I don't know how to play the piano, but can write music. I know there is a musical notation view in GarageBand, and see a pull-down menu of notes, but don't know how to add them to the bar. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

GarageBand FAQ: Create MIDI Region

"Back in the GarageBand timeline (not the editor pane) Command-Click in the software track to create an empty region in which to place notes. You can then add the notes to the newly created region in the editor pane by Command-Clicking within this newly created region. "
