Does adding Ram yourself void AppleCare? And is it a hassle to do by yourself?
Thanks

It is not hard and it doesn't void your warranty

Great, thanks. So buying from a third party company such as Newegg would be wiser than to get the upgrade from apple when I buy my Powerbook?

Yep and much cheaper, newegg has kingmax 1 GB for $100, and very fast shipping.

I'm surprised that opening a p/book yourself and installing additional 3rd party ram doesn't affect warranty.
Can someone tell me what the standard config is in a 15" p/book. Is it 1 stick of 512 and 1 empty port or 2 sticks of 256?

That is no longer correct except for maybe the ibooks. when you buy it it comes with 1 512 i believe, i had 2 512 when i ordered it, but I took one out a couple weeks down the road and but a gig stick in and kept the other 512, but at the moment, only have a gig in because the motherboard of the powerbook is fried :eek:neye: any way, so standard, with no memory in it is just 2 slots there is none sodered on the mother board any more.

more on adding memory

I have just acquired a powerbook and am also looking to add memory. Looking into the mechanics of upgrading, it seems fairly straightforward. As stated by the last poster, the powerbook now comes with a 512 meg module installed leaving the second slot free.

Two questions:

1) how important is it to use the same Ram manufacturer as Apple (the memory on mine is by Samsung)

2) Can I add a 1 gig memory module (for a total of 1.5 gig) or must the modules match in terms of size (e.g., 2x 512 meg or 2x 1gig)?

Thanks,
Switcher

This is my first post. I am an old PC hand who finally had enough

All you need to install is Apple compatible memory. So you can add any size you want to add.
