Measuring the Area of a 2D Image??

Hello,

Does anyone know of a program that will allow me to measure the area of an image in 2D? There is a program for PC called Brava! which will let me scan a map, calibrate a measuring tool, and then measure the area but I don't know of anything for Mac that will do the same thing. Does anyone have an suggestions?
