I just replaced my second hard drive since May on my 3 year old Macbook. I'm running at about 60ºC (~1800RPM)with only Safari and Open Office running, which doesn't seem too hot. However, I can't afford to buy a new HD every few months, so I was wondering if anyone thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and switch the fan or if there might be something else I need to look at.

Hard drives can fail at any time. Even brand new drives right out of the box can fail when fired up the first time. I don't think the heat has anything to do with it, however, since your machine is not under warranty, you might want to disassemble it and clean it out. Instructions can be found at iFixit: The free repair manual.

And practically all hard drives have 3 year warranties. There shouldn't be any need for the purchase of a replacement for a failed drive during that time. WD had a replacement in my mailbox in 2 days earlier this year.
