Hello,

I recently ordered myself a Canon Vixia HF M30 for taking videos of my friends and I. We plan to make a small film this year when we go on a snowboard trip.

Now, my mac Is rather old. The first Intel Macbook. I can transfer my clips onto my computer just fine (although it takes a while) however I run into "dropped frames" a lot.

I don't have very much space on my hardrive so I was wondering if I could just buy an external and hopefully solve these issues.

I simply do not have enough money for a new Mac.

If anyone has any help it would be appreciated

With using FCE, you definitely want to use a drive separate from your boot drive for your scratch and capture drive(s). AFAIK, that version Macbook has a FW400 port on it, assuming I'm correct, get a drive chassis that supports FW400 and choose a drive to use (depending on how much you capture and work with, remember that log and transfer for FCE will convert AVCHD footage into Apple Intermediate Codec which will take 3-9x the amount of space it takes in AVCHD - will help to determine the min capacity you would need.)

How much RAM do you have in that macbook anyway? you may want to look into adding more if that's an option for your model.

Okay, so buying a new external HD should solve my problem for Dropped frames? I have considered financing a refurbished iMac. Simply because it would be faster, but then I would need an external HD anyways?

I have already upgraded my Mac to the Max Ram which is sadly only 2GB. :/
