I'm trying to connect my macbook to my tv. the tv is a few years old, standard definition, nothing special. it has s-vdeo and rca inputs. i bought the mini-dvi to video adapter and got a cable that has male s-video and 3.5 mil input on one end and then all three rca outputs (red, yellow, white) on the other. sound works fine, but i'm getting to no video. it is because i am going form s-vid to rca? or is it cause i have a digital signal going to an analog tv and need an adapter for that?

It should work for you.

Will "assume" you did change the TV to the correct input?

Try both S-Video and the composite. I have not personally used either of these two connections since the mid to late 90s, so I'm not really sure if you may also need to open up the Displays preferences to adjust the resolution or not.
