I heard that when you purchase an ibook from apple you get a free .mac account. Is this true???

60 day trial, that's as long as the "free" part lasts.

No it's not free, that I know of, but I think they're discounting it to $60 (US).

I didn't really believe him either...I think the free trial is open to anyone, purchasers of macs or otherwise.
