Hi everyone,

This is my first post! :Blushing:

Anyway, I have this strange problem with my MDD DP 867MHz and I need your help.
Here are the symptoms: Mac sometimes works like 5-6h without any problem and suddenly freezes, sometimes 3mins after starting gets frozen, sometimes wont even start.
I tried with restarting PMU, PRAM and NVRAM. It has 2 x 256mb PC2100 RAM. I don't know what to do, it's driving me crazy.

If someone knows what's a problem please tell me, I will appreciate.

Freezing usually indicates a hardware problem. I'm not familiar with that model Mac, but some things to check are:

1. System memory

2. graphics card

3. hard drive

Keep up with making backups in case it's the hard drive which is failing. And I'm sure some of our other forum members who are more familiar with your machine will have additional ideas for you to pursue.

When the computer freezes...are you getting a message that says you need to restart the computer?

What OS version are you running?

Thank you for answering,

I tried replacing HDD and memory but it's still a same.
When it freezes there are no message appearing, I can't move the mouse or do anything expect turning the Mac off.
OSX 10.4.0 is installed.

Thanks again!

When you say that you replaced the ram...do you mean that:

- you removed the ram that was in it, and then put the same ram back in?
- you removed the ram, and installed different ram?

Regardless of which you did..."bad" or incompatible ram can be a big source of headaches in older Mac's. If this ram is not guaranteed to be Macintosh compatible...or if it was some ram that came from a Windows computer...it may be the source of the problem.

Also I wanted to mention. I saw that you're running OS 10.4.0. In case you didn't know...you can upgrade your OS for free up to OS 10.4.11 via "Software Update".

Perhaps even better is the OS X.4.11 Combo Update available here for download:-

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC)

Also boot from your Tiger install disc by holding down 'C' immediately after the chime , go into Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Disk to check out the hard drive. Keep us posted?

Again, thanks! :)

I didn't tried OS X 10.4.11 but I tried with 10.4.6 and during the installation screen gets frozen and a message appear that says I need to restart the computer.

To answer on ram question, I tried with different ram.

Like I mentioned earlier...if the ram isn't guaranteed to work in a Macintosh...this may be the problem area.

And do not use modules from PC shops as they are invariably high density modules, and G4's are extremely fussy about using low density modules. They may look the same, but that is where the similaroty ends and do not get them mixed up!

By the sound of things would put money on you have incompatible memory modules.
