I was given a Macbook, old-school 1,1 13 inch.
It has the original 4600 rpm 60 gb hdd in it and I need more space.

I was going to get a 500 gb 7200 rpm seagate momentus
But then I started reading some other's posts and it seems there is some debate on the pros vs cons of using a 7200 rpm hdd.

Should I use a 5400 or 7200? The arguments I hear deal with heat and battery life. I am willing to lose some battery life, if I can get a good boost in speed.

thoughts and comments are wanted!

PS I also looked into the Western Digital Scorpio Black 500gb, similar specs, prices are about the same.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

There is a lot of argument speed v heat and if you Google this you will get a lot of different answers. The best advice is, perhaps, from Bare Feats who went to the trouble of running bench tests and look at the blast two results on each frame and note the last paragraph Analysis and Insights on the results having no great differences unless you are into advanced graphics and audio work.

MacBook Pro - 5400rpm

On that advice, stick to the 5400 RPM.
