Black screen on Google Earth

When I load Google Earth on my MacBook, I don't get an image of the earth, just a black screen. From a web search, I found advice that my browser was probably blocking cookies and that I should change this to accept them. I have done this, trying two separate browsers (Safari and Firefox). This does not solve the problem. I have also tried re-installing Google Earth. This also has no effect. Can anyone help with another solution. Is it possible that a recent reinstall of a new harddrive had something to do with it?
