I wanted to install Norton AntiVirus software on my MAC last night because I work in a mixed environment and don't want to risk getting some crap on my MAC. Anyway, when I went to install it I was informed by Symantec that I need to load something called Rosetta for their software to install. I attempted to load Rosetta from my MAC OS disc and got an error message basically stating that it could not load it because I had a newer OS version than what is on the disc. I'm running 10.6.3 and the most current is 10.6.4. So I try to download and install 10.6.4 from Apple and I have failed repeatedly to download the 830+ MB file. I'm using a hardwire connection from Roadrunner. I get to just under 800mb and it chokes. What is the best way to get around this? Personally, I think it is absurd to expect anyone to download a file that freaking huge. Any ideas are welcome!

The mistake is choosing Norton anything to load on your Mac. Be thankful that you can't install it. Norton AV is not needed nor any other AV software for your Mac - there are no viruses that can infect your machine. There are several trojans that you can get tangled up with but that's if you're into downloading illegal files or frequent nasty sites.

If you're paranoid about this, then download the free ClamAV for OS X and install that instead.

By "choke" I mean it stops, gives me an error message.

While I am not overly worried about a virus on the Mac OS I am on the Windows OS I will be installing using Parallels. There are some programs I use that are not offered in the Mac platform.

Personally, I would bet there is an upsurge in viruses for Macs. Apple seems to be tightening the noose as of late and is gaining in market share. There are many more people using Macs today than there were 10 years ago. Take myself for example. I used Windows for 20+ years and know numerous others who have made the switch. Granted, there is a lot lower RISK for Macs vs. Windows OS of becoming infected, but with all of the Cyberterrorism on the rise I would rather not become a victim.

It isn't because hackers target Windows over Macs due to the # of users. It's because of the secure Unix base that Mac OSX is built on. Mac OSX requires you to enter your password to install anything, so you can not unknowingly contract a virus, trojan, etc. Just another safety feature among many.

OP - By all means install a 'Windows' antivirus program on the windows OS on your machine - but leave the mac side alone. You won't get any cross infection.

and here lies the problem... the user.
here, install this new update from apple!
heres that new app that does what you want it to!
honestly, 90% of virus problems are because of people deciding to download porn.exe
also, what does the error message say?

Set up Parallels and when Windows whatever is installed, download Microsoft Security Essentials and keep it up to date. It will maintain the partition for you.

I agree with Sawday, install an Antivirus in Windows when you get it installed. I would not bother with Norton though. There are free AV applications for Windows that work just as well as Norton and don't hog the resources like Norton does.

Thats probably the better option. It frustrates me so much when I get called out to deal with a slow computer and the customer refuses to let go of Norton even when I disable it and show them the speed increase, they refuse to let me throw a freebie Microsoft one, but then again she was the person who "watered" her computer because it was hot :p
