Crashes are loosing me money, I need some help and fast

Hi Guys

First off let me give you a bit of background. I am a freelance TV and Film producer, so i spend ALOT of time in front of my 2006 MacPro 1,1 editing. I have had increasing problems with crashes over the past few months. I have tried everything i can think of:

Flattened my hard drives and re built them
Cleaned out the inside of the tower
Ran every diagnostic mac ship with OSX
Ran Tech Tool Pro 5
Ran regular virus checks
Reset the PRAM

The crashes vary in when and how they happen. Sometimes its when I'm switching between windows, sometimes while video is playing, and sometimes when i move the pointer to select a program from the dock.

I have the notorious ATI 1900XT gfx card, but i have just brought the Quadro 4500 FX hoping this will sort out some of the issues, but the kernal panics are becoming more and more frequent now.

I'm not particularly good at reading crash reports, but I do have some other questions.

You mention you run regular AV checks. What AV software; is it always on in the background; and more particularly… why are you running AV software?

What version of OS X?

Have you tried reinstalling OS X?

Do you have the same problems when logged into alternate user accounts on the same computer?

Have you tried disabling anything that loads on startup? (check System Preferences > Accounts > username > Login Items). Feel free to list what you have loading in that list.

When this first started, is it possible you did something like add or replace hardware (like the RAM) or install some software?

I don't think it has anything to do with your GPU, it looks like a RAM error to me - ("pmap_flush_tlbs() timeout: "). Have you recently upgraded the memory?

You can toruble shoot this by removing all of your RAM sticks except one at a time and testing this way - use the Apple hardware diagnostics by holding down 'D' at bootup.

I am running Avast, as i have had a couple of trojans and virus over the years.

Yes that was the first thing I did, i flattened my hard drive totally and re-built it.

No the only upgrade i have made have been hard drives.

I have had problems with lines of pixels embedded in windows that are linked with the ATI card, so i need to upgrade that anyway.

The RAM I have tested using Hardware Diagnostics and using Tech Tool Pro, but every time it says they are all fine.

You haven't had any Viruses on your Mac OS as there haven't been any!
As for trojans, only if you've allowed them by giving your password when prompted on some dodgy or illegal download.

The conversation about whether AV is required is irrelevant to this discussion and is very unlikely to be causing Kernel panics anyway.

pmap_flush_tlbs() timeout: indicates that the CPU is waiting for another component to respond (it's an I/O error, and although it's possible it's software releated, more likely it's hardare.

If you've done a completely fresh install of SL and played around with the default programs for a while and had no errors, you could install things one at a time and see when the system goes down.

Does this tend to happen immediately or after a certain amount of activity or 'up-time'? It is possible that it's an overheating issue - again could be RAM or possibly the GPU?

Do you have any external drives plugged into your machine and are they always plugged in? Are they USB or FireWire? Do you put your machine to sleep?

I have had problems with my newest hard drive not mounting after crashes. As soon as I finish my project I will flatten it and see if it still plays up.

The over heating issue is one that I have tried to counter by using SMC fan control, it keeps it in check but a lot of my work centres around resource intensive tasks so it is difficult to keep the temp down below the 26o c.

The crashes tend to be consistently unpredictable. I was just compressing a large animation file using compressor and went to open up firefox and it crashed. But earlier it crashed during start up and displayed a bright pink screen.

Its good to know that it is hardware, and I think ram would be the best place to start, I just don't understand why when i run diagnosis it says all four sticks are fine and working well.

I sometimes work off Western Digital My Book Studio drives with a firewire 800. But not right now. I have 4 externals 3 x 1TB's and 1 x 500GB. I shut down when not working, but the Mac sleeps if inactive for 15 mins.

One thing I have thought of is that all 4 drives are pushing 95% full as I have a major project on that was all shot 1080i this could cause the drives to stop functioning properly i have been told.

Assuming that's 26 degrees C (as opposed to 260 degrees) then that's very low and it certainly isn't an overheating issue.

CPUs can run up to 80 degrees without serious issue (although that's not particularly healthy) and GPUs around 70 degrees (or at least my Radeon 4890 tends to crash around 80 degrees).

A crash at startup that's not consistent really does sound like a RAM issue, simply because RAM is used pretty randomly by the system (no pun intended).

I'm largely asking about the AV software because some, Norton in particular, are notoriously buggy and resource hogs. I would recommend ditching your AV software for the time being, just to be sure it isn't a factor. As 6string said, there are no viruses that can infect OS X, and you'll only get a trojan if you are grabbing one disguised as pirated software.

That aside, my gut instinct would be the RAM, as Zoolook has quite nicely summed up. Of course with your graphics card acting up, that should be addressed to rule it out as a factor, even if it may be unlikely.

Another vote for the memory. Are all modules matched pairs? If so, remove them all and start with the original pair that came with the machine and see if the kp's stop, and then add further pairs until you find the dodgy memory.

Have had memory fail in my Mac Pro, even though Apple Hardware Test gave it a clear bill of health. What caused the light globe to come on for me was going into Apple System Profiler > Diagnostics and seeing the Power On Self test Failure notice.

Another vote for memory issues. The sticks are for Macs and not pc's..right? If I was doing video production that machine would never be on the net.

There's no mention that this is in any way related to the crashes you are having, but since you do have this model card, you may as well check to see if it is part of the recall. With any luck, that will at least get that much fixed.

I just ran across an interesting utility that is supposed to very thoroughly test out your RAM. It was last updated for 10.5, but could well work fine with 10.6.

I doubt this is the source of your issues, but "95% full" drives can't be anything but bad news.

OS X likes *LOTS* of elbow room, and so do certain applications *especially when working on large video files.*

You need to find a way to have LOTS of free space available on at least the boot drive if not all the drive you're using. LOTS in this case means minimum 25GB or more free.

I'll wager doing that will make a difference. Might not solve all the problems, but I'm sure it will make a difference.

Quick update: I have brought a Quadro FX4500 and 8GB of RAM to fix my problems with the crashes, also thanks to lifesabeach my graphics card replacement is covered under a scheme where Apple replace or refund those who have the ATI X1900 XT as it is faulty.

Just to make it clear...are you saying that Apple replaced your x1900xt card...and replaced it with the FX4500?

Also...the article linked earlier by "lifesabeach" says:

"The replacement program will be good until January 31, 2011, or until three years after the original purchase date, whichever comes first."

Since you have a Mac Pro 1,1 (which was introduced August, 2006 and discontinued January, 2008)...did your computer fall within the 3 years since purchased?

Because as of today's date Oct. 4, 2010 (for example)...if your computer was purchased before Oct 4, 2008...then technically it would be older than 3 years...so then I was wondering if Apple is being "flexible"...since the program doesn't expire till Jn 31, 2011.

Apple will honor the replacement if you have the serial number that matches the recall notice. They will replace it, or refund any costs of repair or replacement. Although I am having difficulties with their 'Customer Relation Department' not responding to emails.
