I need help with my iMac. I've got what is known as a Kernal Panic. The report looks like this and I would really appreciate it if anyone could explain to me what is going on. Thanks.

Appears that it is having issues with the USB subsystem or doesn't like one of the USB devices you have plugged into it.

If it's only happened once, I wouldn't even waste my time troubleshooting it. If an ongoing issue, then you might want to pop in your original disc and run the apple hardware test.

This is a bit hard on my vanity but would you please name the "appropriate" forum.

Hi again,

I just ran the Apple Hardware Test on my iMac and it concluded the following hardware failures:

4MEM/4/40000000:454ac010

and

4MEM/1/40000000:21c000

Can someone please enlighten me and explain to me what's wrong?

Yours sincerely,

I hope this isn't stating the obvious, but that's a RAM issue - module 1 and module 4. It's possible it's the slot, but more than likely it's the RAM module itself.

Did you recently increase the RAM? Is it a 3rd party component? If yes to either, I suggest returning the 2 modules for a refund. If it came configured this way from Apple, let them correct it.

The problem definitely won't go away and could result in some serious data loss if you get a crash at the wrong moment. As a short term fix, you could remove module 1 and 4 and put module 2 and 3 in the 1 and 2 slot, and re-run the hardware test.
