I am a college student who purchased a 2.4GB Macbook Pro in January 2008 for school. Last week, the computer died on me. I took it to the Apple store and was told that the logic board was most likely the issue and it would cost $600 for the new logic board and around $800 if I had them fix it there.

My dad has a friend who says he would be able to help me out. I guess my real question is more of a "what would you do" situation? I don't know the cheapest his co-worker can get the part for. I'm assuming that the Apple store was correct in assessing what was broken. The computer isn't in perfect condition. It fell from a desk over a year ago and has a dent in the corner. Though, it also has a lot of expensive programs on it including photoshop and flash that I just recently purchased.

I guess my question is primarily, is it worth fixing?
