I just downloaded the latest security update through "Software Update…" menu. It prompted for a restart as usual and it has been on the blue startup screen for about 30 mins now with the spinning loading bars. I'm too scared to turn it off and restart. Running MBP with OS X 10.6.4 had no other apps or anything running and my Time Machine was not running when I clicked restart. Any ideas? Thanks.

Close to an hour now. Should I just risk it and power off then on?

Try to manually reboot the machine. If you have a Time Machine backup prior to the security update, you can always revert back.

I ended up just manually rebooting. When it restarted, it took slightly longer I guess because I shut it off, but it did restart and the update installed. Everything is good now. Thanks for the suggestion chscag.

As a suggestion in future go to the Apple web site and download the Combo Updater. It is much larger and seems to be much more reliable. Your computer will install whatever it needs from the updater. Here is the link to the OS X.6.4 Updater and if you have more troubles, try that:-

You can also download Security Update 2010-006 from the Apple web site.

Just click on the blue Security Update link.

You should repair permissions anytime you install updates.
