September 2000, and apart from the Sydney Olympic Games running in full swing, Apple's major announcement was the launch of OS X beta and boy did it change our world. Remember the dire predictions of installing OS X without the firmware update frying the logic boards and making your computer absolutely and completely unusable?

They were scary times and many of us no doubt delayed installing OS X and stuck with Classic.

I have to say that as critical I seem to have been of Apple lately, I'm glad to see that OS X is still going strong 10 years after it was released. As many of you may know, I'm a big fan of *nix technology and I have to congratulate Apple for bringing Unix to the mainstream desktop/notebook market successfully. Here's to another 10 years of fast, stable and improved versions of OS X.

10 years ago when most folks were running OS 9 (and OS X was released)...the first thing I thought was "CRAP"...now I'm going to have to buy new versions of all my software so they will run fast & "natively".

Apple did the same thing back in the early to mid-90's when they changed from the original "68k" code Mac OS...to the Power-PC based code. Somewhat similar to the "Mac OS X / Classic" relationship.

I knew about OSX 10 years ago but at that time I was living with roomates and had to cover their end so much I never had the $$$ to get a Mac that would run OSX decently. Also that first 10.0 was pretty buggy but on it's way to being a great OS. It was 10.2 Jaguar that won me over and I was able to get a G3 and later G4 Powermac and run OSX finally. Been an OSX user ever since!!

I do own a Retail Box version of OSX 10.1. It was pretty nice but still not there for me. 10.2 was so much better and ditto with 10.3, 10.4, ETC!

Thats awesome.

For me im so happy with 10.6 and does everything i need and more on my new MBP, so im not even wondering if/when 10.7 will be out. I know they will out do themselves with 10.7, but honestly would be happy if 10.6 stayed with me til the end.....If i started at 10.1 or 10.2 i probably would have said the same thing haha

THEN again updating to 10.7 would be exciting lol

I know what you mean! To me 10.6 is the best yet. I am very happy with Snow Leopard here. Just need 2 more Intel Macs so I can really enjoy it!!

Nice article there.
I too came in with Jaguar, as the iMac G4 was my first computer ever.
Really interesting looking back on those screenshots of 10, as it really shows how things have evolved into Snow Leopard.
I agree that Snow Leopard is the best by far and it's hard to see how Apple will top it, but I do remember seeing rough drawings of a 3D OS that Apple had patented. That's got to be the next big change I guess.

Too many...
I don't remember what my first mac was, but I got it from my old middles school(when I was entering it!) after they had planned to demolish and build a new school. All the computer went, and I ended up with 2 OLD macs, and factory mother-ship of an Apple printer! All for 15 bucks! Oregon trail was fun on it! But I seriously doubt it was OSX:) It was the model with a screen that sat on top of a flat board with a flappy/floppy drive. The other was a solid 1 part mac...I think it was called the Classic if I remember correctly.

I think my school had a thing with macs:) because I'm pretty sure they were unbelievably expensive when they got them.

My first serious experience with OS X was with Tiger and to this day still occupies the spot of the version of OS X that was the most impressive. I'm using a much more powerful machine with SL now (had Tiger on a 450Mhz G4) but I remember being quite impressed with Tiger.

For me first OS X was OS X.1 (Puma) with a fair degree of fingers crossed trusting I had upgrade the firmware correctly and would not fry the logic board of my new G3 350MHz slot loading iMac. Ahh the beauty of Aqua. What a jump OS X was from OS 6 when first started using Macs.

Yes...I was going to mention that "benefit"...since I knew you liked older music.

Look at it this way...you get to enjoy 80's music now...with all of the technological innovations of 2010.:) Of course today it's harder to find single "hot chicks" that also like 80's music...unless you like to date the 40+ crowd!! Ha ha!;)
