Hi,

Within the last 5 weeks i've been getting an error message saying " you need to restart your computer - Hold down the power button". I thought this was a Kernal problem and done the CMD - CTRL - P & R option. But it has happened about 4 times since, after the reboot there is no problem and everything works.
I ran a Disk Utility (see below), hopefully someone can give some advise. I've installed no 3rd party software and the laptop is about 18 months old.

Repairing permissions looks normal. What you probably experienced was a kernel panic. If it happened four times, that might indicate a hardware problem. The next time it occurs, copy the report to the clipboard and post it here for us to look at.

Kernel panics can also be caused by software but usually it's a hardware glitch.

Have you installed any new ram into this computer? Frequently "bad" ram can be a source of kernel panics.

Frequent Kernal Panics are usually indicative of a hardware problem. Disk Utility's Verify/Repair Disk and Verify/Repair Permissions corrects issues with the Filesystem, but it can not correct a hardware problem.

Start by running the Apple Hardware Test (as described here) and let us know how you make out.

Since the AHT is not always great about detecting HDD failures, you might also want to download and run the SMART Utility (available here).

Too many...
Have you ever deleted a file, that when deleting that file, it asked you to delete every other file associated with it?

Hi, I've run the Apple Hardware test (plus the extended one) and it says "No trouble found". I'm not aware of any files deleted that had associates to it.

Could this be software related ?

It could be, but I'd be inclined to say no. Did you run the SMART Utility that I linked to?
